Today I was booking time slots with a class for a parents' evening. One student said his parents didn't have much time so they were going to see the 'core subjects' only.
"so which subjects are in the core", I asked. At which point the student reeled off almost every subject except art, music, drama...
I was so annoyed. At least the student had the grace to be embarassed. The truth is that the boy is quite good at the subject but lacks confidence and experience; he isn't going to be encouraged at home.
In later life he will say he was never good at art. Well he probably didn't get a chance.
