Jasper Johns at The Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art

I'd love to get to the Johns exhibition. This review on the 24 hour museum site is excellent. It was an enthusiastic review by Richard Dorment in the Telegraph. that first caught my attention.

Johns obliquely alludes to his deepest and most protected feelings, a sense that people are real and lovable only in parts.

Adrian Searle in the guardian is less sure.

If, at the end, he is painting anything, it is the process of the mind at work, filled with stray thoughts, its affinities and enthusiasms. A mind led by curiosity, and haunted by its own past, from which it cannot extricate itself.

The Art department will certainly be getting the catalogue, and I wonder if Johns can provide a way into the Year 12 project I'm developing. We are going to look at objects. We have a day booked at the National Gallery, London in order to make connections (encounters if you like) to the still-life tradition ? But there are other traditions. Many were included in the Objects of Desire exhibition organised by MOMA, New York which came to London in 1997.

But reading the reviews perhaps John's work is more about identity and the body... Nevertheless he depicts objects and examines how they might be painted; he looks at how a depicted object might contain meaning or not.

The 24 Museum site is getting better and better this review about Luc Tuymans was excellent. Insightful.
