Really striking poetic work - the first room had hung on the walls these large rectangular painting-shaped pieces. Lumps of coal had been wired into place on the surface of large rectangular steel sheets, and these in turn appeared to rest on old chairs. You could smell the coal. The steel had a delicious surface of deep blues and purples within the hard grey. The arrangement of coal, in ordered rows, appeared like lettering on a blackboard (literally black boards). The piece was powerful for being so material.
I remember when as a student I first came across the painting of John Walker
Its sheer physicality overwhelmed me.
It would be good to think how that experience could be put into pupils learning.
