There is some inset training being advertised at the moment that suggests that the modular (units) nature of the current AS/A2 set-up is workable and if we look linearly then the old joy of the previous A level is possible. It's not as simple as that, of course, but I regret that we can't do a linear A level at my school. However, to do so would remove the possiblity of a child achieving an A level if they don't want to carry on with the subject after the first year.
The problem with the units is that each one has the same criteria weighting for each. This means there is too much repetition. The GCSE where the Assessment Objectives (AOs) have to be covered across several units is much more flexible. One unit can be strong on

another on
Understanding Contexts in Art, Craft and Design
and so there is no need to repeat stuff.
My other gripe is with the period in the Summer term of the first year sixth (year12) when students have finished their exam. Having been well trained in the previous year (year11) to take the Summer off that is exactly what they do, when in the past they would just be getting going.
My panic will come once marking and display gets under way.
